Omiš

  • Split Region

This small Dalmatian town at the mouth of the Cetina river, some 25 km south of Split, offers a unique blend of the river, the sea and mountains, its proud and fascinating history and rich cultural heritage.  First mentioned in ancient times, it was a medieval pirate stronghold and a venue of numerous pirate battles, during various periods of its history a part of the Republic of Venice, the Austrian Empire and Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces, and it continues to stand proudly today „upon the rock of Omiš“ ( i.e. „na omiškoj stini“ , as the famous klapa song says).

While its numerous monuments, such as the forts Mirabela and Fortica, its Early Christian churches and Renaissance details, bear witness of the town’s glorious history, the impressive nature of its surroundings speaks for itself. Such diversity and multitude of opposites, brought together in perfect harmony on such as small territory, is rarely to be found elsewhere and continues to attract and impress thousands of visitors each year. It is therefore no wonder that the tradition of summer vacations in this area goes back more than a century.
